One-time purchase
What is a one-time purchase?
A one-time purchase is a transaction in which a customer pays for a product or service with a single payment, without committing to an ongoing subscription. Once the purchase is complete, there are no automatic renewals or recurring charges.
For example, buying a pair of trainers with a single payment is a one-time purchase. By contrast, paying a monthly fee for a streaming service or a subscription box is a recurring purchase, where payments are made automatically at regular intervals.
Many ecommerce businesses offer both one-time purchases and subscription options for the same product. This gives customers the flexibility to choose whether they want to buy a product once or receive it on a recurring schedule, often at a discounted subscription price.
Combining One-Time Purchases and Subscriptions
Offering both purchasing options is a common strategy in subscription commerce. It allows businesses to appeal to first-time buyers while encouraging repeat purchases through subscriptions.
Subscription brands also use one-time purchases to complement existing subscriptions. For example, a customer subscribed to monthly coffee deliveries may be offered a one-off purchase of a limited-edition blend, branded mug, or accessory. This approach, known as cross-selling, helps increase revenue while enhancing the customer experience.
Providing both one-time and subscription options can also reduce the barrier to purchase, allowing customers to try a product before committing to a recurring subscription.
Best Practices for Cross-Selling
When used effectively, cross-selling can increase Average Order Value (AOV), Customer Lifetime Value (LTV), and customer satisfaction by offering relevant products that complement previous purchases or existing subscriptions.
To maximise the effectiveness of cross-selling:
- Personalise recommendations based on customer behaviour, purchase history, or subscription preferences.
- Display recommendations at key points in the customer journey, such as product pages, the basket, checkout, and the customer account portal.
- Ensure the purchasing experience is seamless across desktop and mobile devices.
- Recommend products that genuinely add value, rather than overwhelming customers with too many options.
- Use customer segmentation and purchasing data to present timely and relevant offers.
A well-executed cross-selling strategy not only increases revenue but also strengthens customer relationships by making it easier for shoppers to discover products that meet their needs.
