How discount stacking works in Yari Flow
Note Shopify controls how discounts combine and which combinations are supported. Review Shopify’s discount combination documentation for more information about its rules and limitations.
How discount stacking works in Yari Flow
Discount stacking, also called discount combining, describes how multiple discounts interact when they apply to the same subscription order.
Understanding the order in which discounts are calculated can help you create effective pricing strategies and avoid unexpected subscription totals.
How is the final subscription price calculated?
Yari Flow and Shopify apply pricing adjustments and discounts in a specific order, beginning with the product’s base price in Shopify.
How stacking works:
1. Shopify base price
Every calculation begins with the product or variant price configured in Shopify before any subscription pricing or discounts are applied.
2. Price adjustments
Some Yari Flow pricing features are not treated as traditional discounts. Instead, they directly set or replace the product price.
Selling Plan discounts:
- Selling Plan discounts define the subscription price relative to the Shopify base price. For example, a Selling Plan may offer 10% off when a customer subscribes to a monthly delivery. This adjusted amount becomes the starting subscription price displayed to the customer and used for recurring orders.
3. Product-level discounts
Product-level discounts apply to specific products or subscription lines.
When multiple product-level discounts are eligible for the same item, Shopify generally applies only the discount that provides the greatest value.
Product-level discounts may include:
- Shopify product discount codes
- Quantity-based volume discounts
- Price-based volume discounts configured for selected products
A price-based volume discount is treated as product-level when it only applies to subscription lines containing products selected in the rule.
4. Order-level discounts
Order-level discounts are applied after product-level discounts have been calculated.
These may include:
- Price-based volume discounts configured for the entire subscription
- Shopify order-total discount codes
- Surprise & Delight order discounts
5. Shipping discounts
Shipping discounts are calculated after product and order discounts.
Depending on their configuration, shipping discounts may combine with product or order discounts.
Shipping adjustments may include:
- A recurring free-shipping override configured in a Selling Plan Group
- Delivery price changes applied through Yari Flow Journeys
- Shopify shipping discount codes that support subscription orders
6. Taxes and final totals
After product prices, discounts, and shipping have been calculated, Shopify determines the applicable taxes.
Yari Flow rounds subscription prices to two decimal places to help prevent billing inconsistencies.
How sequential discounts work Discounts apply to the remaining subtotal rather than being added together. For example, two consecutive 10% discounts result in a total discount of 19%, not 20%: $15.00 base price → $13.50 after the Selling Plan discount → $12.15 after the second discount
Yari Flow discount types and considerations
Subscription discounts
Subscription discounts are configured in Yari Flow Selling Plans.
They define the subscription price compared with the Shopify base price, such as 10% off for a product delivered every 30 days.
Journey discounts and pricing actions
Yari Flow Journeys can change subscription pricing through several actions.
Add discount
Applies an eligible Shopify discount code or a manual Yari Flow discount when the Journey conditions are met.
Update product price
Overrides the price of a subscription line, usually on an ongoing basis.
Because this action sets a new price directly, it may replace previous price adjustments rather than stack with them.
Change delivery price
Changes the subscription’s shipping cost either temporarily or permanently.
This can be used for campaigns such as free-shipping offers or winback incentives.
Volume discounts
Yari Flow supports quantity-based and price-based volume discounts.
Quantity-based volume discounts
Quantity-based discounts are triggered by the number of eligible items in an order.
These discounts use Shopify Functions at checkout for reliable calculation.
Price-based volume discounts
Price-based discounts are triggered when a spending threshold is reached.
For example:
Spend $100 and receive 10% off
You can configure the discount to apply to:
- The entire subscription
- Selected products only
You can also choose whether one-time products should count towards the qualifying threshold.
Avoid running quantity-based and price-based volume discounts simultaneously unless the intended outcome has been carefully tested. Using both can create confusing or unexpected combinations.
Volume discounts can only combine with other discounts when discount stacking is enabled.
To create a volume discount, go to:
Grow > New rule > Volume discount
Surprise & Delight
Surprise & Delight rules provide benefits after a customer reaches a specific subscription cycle.
Examples include:
- A free gift on the third order
- A discount on a selected renewal
- A temporary order-level benefit
Loyalty rewards
Loyalty credits are applied as discount codes.
They can be redeemed on subscription and one-time orders according to Shopify’s discount eligibility and combination rule
Shipping incentives
Subscription shipping incentives can be configured through:
- Shopify shipping profiles
- Selling Plan Group shipping settings
- Yari Flow Journey delivery price actions
- Eligible Shopify shipping discount codes
Discount codes
Shopify discount codes can work with subscriptions when they are configured to support subscription products and recurring orders.
Yari Flow Quick Actions can also allow subscribers to apply eligible codes without logging in to the My Account.
Troubleshooting discount combinations
If a discount combination is not producing the expected result, review the following areas.
Is a feature setting the price instead of applying a discount?
Selling Plan adjustments and Journey product price overrides can directly set the subscription price.
If a Journey updates the product price after another discount has been applied, the new price may replace the previous calculation.
Review the relevant Journey actions and confirm whether they apply a discount or set an exact price.
Are the Shopify discount codes configured for subscriptions?
In Shopify, confirm that the discount code:
- Applies to subscription products
- Applies to recurring orders when required
- Is eligible for the relevant products or collections
- Is allowed to combine with the other discount types being used
To allow multiple discount codes on a Yari Flow subscription, review the discount stacking setting under:
Settings > Billing & orders
Are product-level discounts competing?
Shopify generally applies only one product-level discount to each line item.
This means a product discount code and a volume discount may compete rather than combine. Shopify will usually apply the eligible option that gives the customer the greatest discount.
Is the volume discount configured with the correct scope?
Confirm whether the volume discount should apply to:
- The entire subscription
- Selected products
- Subscription products only
- Subscription and one-time products
Also confirm whether the threshold is based on quantity or order value.
Has the full checkout flow been tested?
Test the complete purchase flow with the intended:
- Products
- Quantities
- Selling Plans
- Discount codes
- Shipping options
The Shopify checkout is the best place to confirm how the final discount combination will behave.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Do Shopify discount codes work with subscriptions?
Yes, but they must be configured correctly.
When creating the discount in Shopify:
- Allow it to apply to subscription products
- Configure it for recurring orders if it should continue after the first purchase
- Review its discount combination settings
- Test it before making it available to customers
Many discount codes apply only to one-time purchases or the initial subscription order unless recurring eligibility is explicitly enabled.
What happens to discounts when a subscription is cancelled?
Yari Flow can automatically remove discount codes when a subscription is cancelled.
Does a discount code continue after its expiration date?
Yes, in some cases.
When a Shopify discount code is applied to a subscription before its expiration date, it may continue to apply to future recurring orders after the expiration date has passed.
This is Shopify platform behaviour.
Keep this in mind when creating time-limited promotions, because an expiration date may prevent new customers from applying the code without automatically removing it from subscriptions where it is already active.
